Tokyo Revengers quickly became the highest-grossing live-action film in Japan in 2021, ahead of Fast 9 and Rurouni Kenshin.
Live-action anime adaptations are generally poorly received, but Japanese audiences have embraced the Tokyo Avengers movie.
According to Japanese tracking site Eiga, the live-action adaptation of the popular time-traveling manga shonen jumped ahead Rurouni Kenshin: the finaltotal at the box office of 4.32 billion yen (approx. US $ 39.0 million), and now sits in fourth place for the year with revenue of 4.38 billion yen ( approximately US $ 39.5 million). This makes Tokyo Avengers the country’s most successful live-action film for the year so far, putting it ahead of blockbusters such as Fast 9 (which was published under the title Savage Speed: Jet Chase in Japan) and Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings In the region. Tokyo Avengers was only surpassed by the three best anime releases of the year, which are Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0: Once upon a time three times first, Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet second, and the critically acclaimed film by Mamoru Hosoda Beautiful third.
The film stars Takumi Kitamura as the protagonist of the series Takemichi Hanagaki. Kitamura will also play another famous animated delinquent, Yusuke Urameshi, in Netflix’s upcoming live-action. Yu Yu Hakusho series, which began filming in Japan over the summer. The film also stars Kamen Rider Fourze and KingdomRyo Yoshizawa as Manjiro Sano, one of the founding members of the Tokyo Manji Gang who is central to the film’s story.
Tokyo Avengers tells the story of Takemichi, a middle-aged loser who is devastated to learn that the girl he dated in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, and her little brother were both murdered by the violent Tokyo Manji Gang. While wallowing in despair, Takemichi is pushed past an oncoming train by an invisible assailant, but instead of dying, he wakes up in the body of his young self in college. Determined to use his knowledge of the future to save Hinata’s life, Takemichi uses his second chance to right his past mistakes and figure out what was wrong with the Tokyo Manji Gang.
Created by Ken Wakui in 2017, Tokyo Avengers is one of the biggest surprise hits to emerge from Weekly Shonen Jump reviewed in recent years. The series has over 40 million copies in circulation worldwide and has received a Kodansha manga award. An animated adaptation was produced by Liden Films, which also produced the Cells at work! Code Black spinoff series as well as the upcoming Card Battle anime Build Divide – # 00000 (Code Black). The anime, which began airing in April and recently completed its first season, was simultaneously aired internationally on Crunchyroll.
