The smiling and sinister hosts come out to socialize again.
20 years after Disney’s first attempt to turn Disneyland’s beloved attraction, the Haunted Mansion, into a feature film, the company is trying again. The new version, also titled Haunted Manor, will hit theaters on March 10, 2023. Currently, it faces no competition for that release date, although the long-awaited Dungeons & Dragons The film is currently set to hit theaters the previous weekend and Timothy Olyphant’s new version of Wonka will open a week later on March 17.
This new Haunted house will be led by Dear Whitesby Justin Simien and star Tiffany Haddish, Lakeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson and Rosario Dawson. Haddish would supposedly play “a psychic hired to commune with the dead” while Stanfield “will play a widower who once believed in the supernatural, but is now a rather lifeless tour guide in the French Quarter of New Orleans”. The screenplay for the film was written by Katie Dippold, whose previous projects include many Melissa McCarthy comedies like The heat, To spy and women of 2016 ghost hunters to restart.
the original Haunted house 2003 film was directed by Rob Minkoff. It starred Eddie Murphy as a workaholic real estate agent trying to sell a property that turns out to be, you guessed it, a haunted mansion. The cast of this film also included Terence Stamp, Wallace Shawn, Marsha Thomason and Jennifer Tilly as the mansion’s famous Madame Leota. The film received mostly negative reviews and did poorly at the box office; over the next decade Disney forgot about the movie and focused on its huge revenue Pirates of the Caribbean series instead.
But then pirate got bogged down in bad sequels and now Disney has returned to the Haunted house again. Given the lukewarm response to the first movie, it’s probably a decent choice for a remake. People love the ride and know the concept, but feel little affection for the first version. We’ll see how they react to the new next year.
