1. Encanto

We may not be talking about Bruno, but we are talking about Encanto, written by Jared Bush and Charise Castro Smith. One of Disney’s latest animated films introduces us to the magical Madrigal family, whose special gifts prove to be both burdens and blessings. Encanto is a powerful examination of family ties and generational trauma, complete with gorgeous animation and catchy melodies courtesy of Lin-Manuel Miranda, including “Surface pressure” and “We’re not talking about Bruno.” — Belen Edwards, entertainment reporter *

2. Fernando

Directed by Carlos Saldanha, Fernando is a heartwarming adaptation of the widely loved 1930s children’s book of the same name. Ferdinand (a charming John Cena) is a sweet bull who loves flowers. He doesn’t want to fight in the arena – he wants to sniff carnations and enjoy his life. Bullfighters, other bulls, and the world around them, however, have different expectations of what a bull should be. Fernando is a fun kids’ movie with uplifting chase sequences and lovable characters, but it’s also a thoughtful meditation on pacifism and what it means to be strong.

3. guardians of the galaxy

A group of comically mismatched heroes team up to save the galaxy while the grooviest soundtrack plays in the background? Yeah, let’s go! guardians of the galaxy is the perfect mix of wacky, exciting and funny. While the blockbuster’s retro space aesthetic is great, its cast (Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper) has the chemistry to keep the momentum going. — Brooke Bajgrowicz, Entertainment Manager *

4. coconut

In coconut, 12-year-old Miguel, tries to return home to Mexico after having, still alive, mistakenly entered the land of the dead. Naturally, this setup lends itself to heated discussions of life and death – and coconut does a nice job unboxing them. But just because it’s thought-provoking doesn’t mean it’s not witty. The fantasy, written by Adrian Molina, overflows with rich colors and catchy songs. What’s not to love about a sentimental, delicious movie? – BB *

5. Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarok is by far the best of the Thor movies. The superhero comedy – in which the God of Thunder attempts to return home to battle his vengeful sister – features Taika Waititi’s clever directorial skills, a colorful new planet and a storyline so witty it’s wrong. Not to mention, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is backed by an all-star cast, including MCU favorites Tom Hiddleston and Mark Ruffalo, as well as the likes of Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, and Tessa Thompson. It all works out to make this one of the funniest installments in the MCU. All. —BB *
