There’s an absolute beast of a list on Netflix when it comes to sci-fi movies and TV shows, but too much choice isn’t always the best and can sometimes be a burden on a science fan. -fiction.
But never fear, we’re here to give you our own list of what we believe are the 10 best sci-fi movies available to stream on Netflix right now.
The best sci-fi movies on Netflix
In no particular order, here are the best sci-fi movies on Netflix, according to Gizmodo Australia.
street of fear
The street of fear trilogy of films are proof that while Netflix has a history of releasing live-action adaptations of beloved stories from people’s childhoods that end up failing to wow audiences, the studio is capable of getting out of it when the circumstances are right. What was alarming (in a good way) about each of the street of fear the films were how, while they initially seemed like their scares would be toned down a bit for young viewers, they were all legitimately horrifying in a way that didn’t feel flattering.
It would be an understatement to say how important this film was for its time. There are many genre films that could be called significant or iconic in one way or another, but one of the best examples is undoubtedly Transformers. The first two Transformers and its sequels have always been used as an example of what Hollywood can go wrong adapting the beloved IP, and look, the reviews following its debut reflected that. Love it or hate it, Transformers is one of the best sci-fi movies out there, and you can watch it on Netflix, so might as well give it another shot.
Blade Runner 2049
Too often, sequels are little more than weaponized nostalgia, but Blade Runner 2049 offered an extended stay in the universe created by Ridley Scott’s original. At the time, we compared watching this movie to staying up all night to finish a 150,000 word fanfiction that you started reading that you thought was good but not great, then you kept reading because you you were engaged in it. And then the next morning, with cloudy eyes throughout the workday, you keep wondering if it was worth it. It’s worth it, in a way, and Blade Runner 2049 is one of the best sci-fi movies you can binge on Netflix, so do it. Let us change your mind.
The hunger Games
If you are unfamiliar, The hunger Games takes place in the systolic future where society is divided into factions. Each year, two children from each faction are harvested to compete in the Hunger Games, a bloodbath fight where only one Tribute survives. Katniss of makeshift District 12 heroically volunteers as a tribute in place of her younger sister. It captures the violence and emotion of the novel it’s based on, with the added bonus of Katniss kicking ass.
It’s been a few years since I’ve seen Butterfly Effectand after going through rotten tomatoes, I think it might be time to give it another watch on Netflix because honestly, I considered this movie one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. The premise is strong: changing the past can radically alter the present. And the execution isn’t the best, a scene involving a dog still haunts me years later, but it had time travel and the philosophical riddle of what would happen now if you did something different many years ago.
Neill Blomkamp’s 2009 feature debut came with the big boost of being produced by Peter Jackson, but District 9 is so distinctive and surprising in its own right that its impact and influence continue to be felt more than a decade later. The themes are vast, but District 9 the gritty style and portrayal of its alien characters still resonates. It’s serious and smart and definitely one of the best sci-fi movies to date.
The plot of Gravity is quite simple: a team of astronauts in space are working on the Hubble Space Telescope, when a Russian satellite is destroyed, throwing debris into a dangerous orbit around the Earth, tearing up telescopes, space stations, shuttles and other satellites. in pieces. It’s a brilliant movie, and you’ll be clinging to your seat from start to finish. The plot keeps you going until the very end, with the series of unfortunate events that plague Dr. Stone from the edge of space until… no spoilers, the movie is only 90 minutes long. It’s a must-have watch.
The Adam Project
With its blend of childlike wonder and sci-fi action, it’s pretty obvious that The Adam Projectthe 2022 Netflix film from director Shawn Levy, is inspired by films from the 1980s. Films like AND, Back to the Future, The Goonies Where Explorers. Beyond that though, one thing that really makes The Adam Project feel like a 1980s movie, and part of the reason we love it so much is how short it is. In the modern world of three-hour superhero movies, fantasy epics with 12 different endings, and eight-hour TV series, there’s just something refreshing and delicious about a movie that jumps as soon as it starts. and maintains this energy until the very end.
by Alex Garland Annihilation has pretty much everything a movie buff could want. It has an incredibly compelling mystery at its heart, it’s filled with nuanced performances by incredible actors, and it looks incredibly fantastic. More importantly, like the best science fiction, it challenges you and makes you think.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines
For our last recommendation, we cannot ignore The Mitchells vs. the Machines. The synopsis is as follows: An eccentric and dysfunctional family’s road trip is turned upside down when they find themselves in the middle of the robotic apocalypse and suddenly become humanity’s most unlikely last hope. It’s cute, fun, and full of sci-fi tropes. It’s made by Sony so similarities can be drawn from the conglomerate’s Spider-Man universe. It’s one of the best anime movies you can watch on Netflix, the bonus is that it’s sci-fi too.
