Tamil actor of blockbuster ‘Singham’ arrested for selling drugs worth Rs 7.5 lakh


A Nigerian actor who was part of Tamil blockbusters “Singham”, “Vishwaroopam” among many others, including Bollywood films, has been arrested for drug trafficking in Bengaluru, police sources said Thursday. Police are now examining its ties to the sandalwood film industry here, in addition to Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and other cities.

Karnataka police arrested Chekwume Malvin, 45, who was staying in Bhattarahalli near KRPuram here on a medical visa. He was arrested while attempting to sell drugs to customers on September 27. The police recovered 15 grams of MDMA and 250 ml of hash oil worth Rs 7.5 lakh from the accused.

Police say the accused starred in 20 Indian films, including Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. He also appeared in popular Kannada films “Annabond” and “Paramatma”.

The accused had taken a theater course at the New York Film Academy Nigeria and in Mumbai. He also starred in three Nigerian films, police said.

Police said the accused took up drug trafficking to make a quick buck. Police arrested him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985. Investigations are ongoing.
