Sony is looking to expand its Spider-Man Cinematic Universe quickly, especially after the disappointing reaction to the studio’s latest film, Morbius. At the Top by Aaron Taylor-Johnson Kraven the hunter and potentially Tom Hardy’s Venom 3Dakota Johnson will also bring a new release in Madame Web. She even recently had her first co-star for the film – Sydney Sweeney.
Following his time on the award-winning Euphoria beside Spider-Man: No Coming Homefrom Zendaya, Sweeney is ready to take on her first role in the world of superhero movies – arguably her biggest role yet. While it’s still a mystery who she will star with, fans are already expecting the young star to play a big part in Sony’s plans for the foreseeable future.
We know very little at the moment about Madame Web, which only recently made its presence felt on social media for the first time before beginning production. Now, ahead of his time in the world of Spider-Man, Sweeney recently opened up about his inclusion in the film with his first public quotes on the subject.
Sydney Sweeney on the role of Madame Web
In an interview with VarietySydney Sweeney has opened up about her upcoming role in Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man spin-off Madame Web.
When asked how she chooses which roles to take on, Sweeney revealed that she looks for roles that are “completely different from each other” and come with several types of challenges. She also wants “shock people” by embodying unexpected characters for her:
“I love trying to find characters that challenge me in different ways and are completely different from each other. I want to continue to shock people with the characters that I play when they don’t expect I choose that then.
As for Madame Web specifically, the actress shared that she was reading “a bunch of comics” to prepare for his role. On top of that, she’s a fan of the Marvel and Sony Cinematic Universes and admitted that she loves the opportunity to make history on the big screen:
“I am. I’ve ordered a bunch of comics. There’s a lot to learn. I’ve always been a huge fan of all the Marvel and Sony Universe movies. I grew up watching them all, and I I’ve been engulfed in the whole world my whole life, so to be a part of it is such an amazing, amazing thing.
Sweeney is gearing up for a new Marvel character
With the long history of Marvel movies from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, movie moguls now have the opportunity to bring in actors who have seen these films evolve over the past two decades. These quotes make it clear that Sweeney is part of that huge fan base, having been interested in movies throughout her life before taking on her biggest blockbuster role to date.
Sweeney has been cast by fans in various roles across the Spider-Verse, mostly for female heroes like Black Cat and Gwen Stacy. Her role likely won’t be made public until production on the film begins, but it looks like she’ll be one of the most important supporting actors alongside Johnson in this story.
Regardless of who she plays, Sweeney’s enthusiasm should encourage fans hoping for a better product from Sony’s superhero saga as it develops. Madame Web will at least be something different from previous releases like the Venom movies and Morbiusand Sweeney can hopefully add his expertise to make it an entertaining story.
Madame Web is in the early stages of pre-production for Sony Pictures.
