Stellan Skarsgård, who played Bill Anderson in the first two Mamma Mia! movies, said he would gladly make a Mamma Mia! 3 if they want to make one.
Stellan Skarsgård is ready to go if they decide to make a Mom Mia! 3. The Mom Mia! franchising is a curious phenomenon. The original Mom Mia!, released in 2008, was a film adaptation of the 1999 Broadway hit musical based on music by ABBA. It featured a sparkling roster of stars, including Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper. A decade later it had a sequel in 2018 Mom Mia! Here we go again, who added Cher and Andy Garcia to the cast and featured another bunch of ABBA songs as well as retaliation of classic hits from the first film.
In Mom Mia!, Stellan Skarsgård plays Bill Anderson, a Swedish adventurer and travel writer. He is one of the three potential fathers of Sophie de Seyfried, who invited all of his mother’s former flames to her wedding. At the end of the film, the three men bond and decide not to know which of them is biologically her father. The sequel features Josh Dylan as Young Bill in a series of flashback sequences, but Skarsgård also reprized his role, reuniting with his love Rosie, played by Julie Walters.
In another surprise year in the works, ABBA reunited this year and announced a new album due out on November 5th. This is the first time the band has made music together in 40 years, and Mom Mia! fans have speculated if this new influx of songs could lead to a third film in the jukebox music franchise. Speaking with Screen cry about his role in the upcoming sci-fi epic Dune, Skarsgård approached the issue with enthusiasm. He’s worried he won’t be here if it takes them another 10 years to make the next movie, but “if they call, I will say yes immediately.“Read the full quote here:
I wish I could say [what it would take to make a new Mamma Mia!]. It took 10 years between Mamma Mia! and mom Mia! 2 – if it’s going to take another 10 years, then I’ll be dead. I’m afraid we won’t be able to. But if they call, I will say yes immediately, because the experience of making those two films was fantastic.
So far there has been no rumbling of a Mom Mia! 3 powers that be, although in 2020 producer Judy Craymer has hinted that this may be something on their agenda. The previous two films were such a box office success that the studio is probably up to something behind the scenes. ABBA’s new album will add to the film’s potential source material, which already includes dozens of unused tracks from ABBA’s original catalog. There are so many song options that potential writers can choose from that neither of the two entries even included “Under Attack”, a song that was in the original musical and ended up being cut from the first movie.
Stellan Skarsgård’s enthusiasm for Mom Mia! 3 is hopefully reflected by the rest of the cast. He clearly had fun doing them, and the fact that the whole group said yes to a second outing means everyone shares the same feelings. Given all of this, fans of the music franchise might have some big news coming sooner rather than later.
