NEW WORLD ORDER director reveals plans for ‘terribly smart’ leader in film

Captain America: New World Order will see Sam Wilson take on The Leader, and director Julius Onah has now shed some light on what fans can expect from Tim Blake Nelson’s “incredible adversary”.

One of the biggest surprises of D23 saw Marvel Studios announce that The Incredible Hulk star Tim Blake Nelson will finally make his return to the MCU Captain America: New World Order.

At this point, it will be sixteen years since we last saw Dr. Samuel Sterns’ head begin to morph grotesquely. A tie-in comic revealed that Black Widow took him into SHIELD custody, though we have to believe he’s behind Power Broker’s Super Soldiers attempt to steal She-Hulk’s blood in his series, and maybe even Ant-Man and the Waspis the mysterious Benefactor.

Talk to Screen Rant at D23, Captain America: New World Order director Julius Onah has dropped some hints as to what The Leader will bring to the table in this movie.

“We’re all paranoid, and I hope we’re all thrilled as well. It’s a movie, like the previous Captain American movies, that [leans] in the tradition of this genre,” teases the filmmaker. “And what’s so great about this movie is that Sam Wilson has an incredible adversary in The Leader, played by Tim Blake Nelson, this brilliant brain who is always 1-2-3-4 steps ahead.”

“I think the audience, watching the movie, will never be able to see what’s happening around the corner.”

In a separate conversation with ComicBook.comOnah said the classic villain was a big part of what made him want to come on board Captain America: New World Order in the first place.

“Let’s just say that one of the things that really attracted me to this project is that The Leader is a man who operates from the intellect, and so it’s great to have an opponent who works with this incredible intellect to really, you know, put Sam through the wringer of this story,” he explains. “And again, as a paranoid thriller, it’s this grounded adventure where I think everything that happens in this movie feels so real and intense, because of who this adversary is.”

“So going back to your other question, what he’s going to have to go through in this movie is because he has an adversary who is so awfully smart.”

It really does feel like Marvel Studios is building something big for The Hulk in the MCU, with this movie likely being part of that story. We would bet on some kind of eventual world war hulks adaptation, a storyline that saw multiple Hulked heroes and villains go head-to-head.

Captain America: New World Order is set to hit theaters on May 3, 2024.
