Lucille Ball was almost killed in “I Love Lucy” – The Hollywood Reporter

Lucille Ball was nearly killed while filming one of her iconic show’s most memorable moments, I love lucy.

The legendary actress was all the rage on social media Friday as fans celebrated her birthday.

In a 1974 interview on The Dick Cavett Show, the actress explained that in the classic 1956 episode of her series titled “Lucy’s Italian Movie,” what was supposed to be a mock fight between her and actress Teresa Tirelli quickly escalated into chaos, and Ball believed that ‘she was going to be killed.

While hilarious for live studio audiences and home viewers, Ball told Cavett that Tirelli, who only speaks Italian, took the moment too far.

“[Tirelli] He was told there would be a fight, and he was also explained that there were times when my legs had to go up in this huge vat of real grapes, ”Ball said. “I slipped and when I slipped I accidentally hit her. And she was offended. So she left and let me have her… it took all the wind.

The mock fight was meant to bring the two actresses down into the tub, off the camera, and Ball would occasionally have a leg or arm pulled for comedic effect. But since Tirelli was angry and was really fighting, it was impossible.

“She held me by the throat,” Ball said. “And she was choking me, and I really beat her to get her out.” I was drowning in these grapes. She was killing me.

Ball eventually managed to remove Tirelli from her and call the director, who was also unaware the situation was out of hand and believed he was just getting gold in comedy, the actress said. .

“She spent so much time beating me in the tank, we had to cut half of it,” Ball said. “Drowning in a vat of grapes was not the route I had planned to go.”

Ball and hubby Desi Arnaz take center stage in Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming film Being the Ricardos, with Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem.
