Every Tuesday in July, our first at PBS will present The latino experience, a three-part showcase of short films about the Latinx experience made by Latinx filmmakers.

With the recent release of In the heights, we decided to take a look at the state of Latinx cinema as a whole; we chat with one of the filmmakers of the PBS series, Karla Legaspy; as well as Aitch Alberto and Santa Sierra, two screenwriters who are working towards a goal of a more inclusive space for all kinds of Latinx voices. These explorations of culture and identity also remind us of the power of independent films to accurately reflect reality in ways often lacking in mainstream Hollywood films.

Our thanks to our friends at PBS for their help with the show this week and to the folks at Latino Public Broadcasting for their work supporting indie Latino expression in public media.
