Chennai and several suburbs have been receiving intermittent rain since Saturday. The uninterrupted rain until Saturday evening proved to be the heaviest in recent years, leading to waterlogging in several areas. Low-rise houses were flooded as the rains continued on Sunday.
Pump sets have been installed at 500 locations by the state government to remove standing water. More than 50,000 food packages have been distributed and relief camps to provide food, shelter and medical care have also opened in the city.
