Hari Nef Joins Cast of Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ From Growing Bananas

We promised to give you all the updates on Greta Gerwig’s completely bonkers look Barbie movie, and my friends, this one is a doozy: Variety confirmed on Thursday that pioneering trans actor Hari Nef had joined the Dollhouse.

A famous model and writer who rose to prominence as an actor with roles in Transparent, Assassination Nation and those of Netflix Youthe role of Nef in Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach’s Barbie is still completely silent, kind of like… well, almost everything about the project except its sprawling cast. In addition to stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, Gerwig has also starred Michael Cera, Will Ferrell, Issa Rae and Tick, tick… Boom! star Alexandra Shipp, all for unspecified roles.

“People usually hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what this movie is going to be,'” Robbie said. British vogue last year, “and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing it and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…'”

That’s right, Margot! We have absolutely no idea what this movie is going to be, and it continues to drive us crazy. Do all of these actors play real people the dolls are based on? Or will it end up being some kind of macabre live action toy story? We’re completely clueless, but completely interested to see what this all becomes.

It’s probably too much to hope that Nef and Kate McKinnon will team up and give us the woman4woman energy that so many young Sapphics get from their own Barbies, but a lesbian can dream, right? And frankly, if that means we get an official Hari Nef Barbie from Mattel, we’re perfectly willing to let Gerwig’s fevered imagination go wherever it pleases in the Dream House.

Until the movie finally comes out next year, we’ll have to keep biting our nails as we quickly wait for more details on this fantastic plastic puzzle. Someone put Aqua back on the stereo, please?
