Family of 20-year-old boy murdered at Akron movie theater desperately seeks justice

AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) – The family of a 20-year-old woman who was murdered at an Akron movie theater is urging the public to help police catch her shooter.

Atavia Robinson, 20, came to the Regal Cinema on Independence Avenue in Akron with her boyfriend for a date night. When her boyfriend argued with someone on the phone, they left the movie early, and that’s when they were both shot in the parking lot.

“It’s inexplicable, I can’t eat, I can’t sleep, I don’t really know what to do,” said her mother, Leah Russell.

Leah Russell and Gary Robinson are living every parent’s worst nightmare.

“I never thought I would see my daughter as broken as she is over the loss of her daughter,” said Atavia’s grandmother, Jeryl Pickett. “It’s just, it’s something you can’t fix as a grandma.”

The parents told 19 News that their 20-year-old daughter, Atavia Robinson, often called Tay for short, is full of life and has big dreams. She wanted to open her own business.

“Outgoing, beautiful smile,” her mother said.

“Yeah, and laughs that can light up a room,” her dad said of his daughter. “She wasn’t afraid to be herself. She was just 100% Atavia at all times. That’s what I liked most about her. »

Her life was cut short during a romantic date with her boyfriend.

“She told me she was going to a picnic and then to the cinema,” her father recalls. “She was super excited just happy, just full of life like she always is, and you never realize how full of life someone is until you have to bury them.”

Around midnight on June 26, they were both shot in the parking lot. Robinson died in hospital, but her 22-year-old boyfriend survived.

“It’s a horrible thing that she was taken from her life at the age of 20 and she was unarmed, and she was running away when she was killed,” her grandfather said. -mother. ” How is it going ? How does this happen in “what we’re supposed to think is a civilized society, it’s not civilized anymore”.

With all the gun violence in Akron in recent months, the family feels like Robinson’s story has slipped through the cracks, but they’re not giving up.

“It’s hard because I mean, I feel like she’s been pushed aside because there’s so much going on, there’s not enough attention, and they are overwhelmed by the crime, it has to stop. It has to stop. No one should be murdered like this anymore.

The cinema has no surveillance cameras and police said there were no witnesses. At this time, police do not have a description of the shooter, but the family suspects someone must have seen something.

“He’s not worth it,” the mother said of her daughter’s killer. “Denounce him. Tay deserves justice, she didn’t deserve this. It’s not right for anyone to be silent. »

Crimestoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The family also raised $15,000 on their own to help find leads.
