Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premieres later this week, and early indications are that it’s going to have a pretty successful opening weekend.
Originally slated for a March debut, Multiverse of Madness was pushed back to early May after Disney delayed almost the entire Marvel slate late last year. This decision may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the strange doctor sequel, as the move took the film out of the way of The Batman.

Now, with a whole month all to itself, it seems Multiverse of Madness is about to have a big kick off for the summer movie season.
STRANGE DOCTOR 2 SELLS MORE TICKETS THAN ANY 2022 FILM
According to fandangopresale ticket numbers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness top all 2022 movies so far:
As mentioned by Fandango editor Erik Davis, the 2016 follow-up strange doctor quintupled the number of tickets sold for the first film in the franchise. For context, strange doctor had an $85 million opening weekend six years ago and finished its domestic box office with $232.6 million. Of the 27 MCU films, Stephen Strange’s first outing is between Thor: The Dark World ($85.7 million) and Black Widow ($80.3 million) looking at the first weekends, and among the national totals of Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($259.7 million) and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($224.5 million).
fandango quotes Captain Marvel, Thor: Ragnarok, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.. 2 like other MCU movies Multiverse of Madness is ahead of schedule, which means it’s a safe bet that Adventure Across the Multiverse will gross over $300 million domestically. Captain Marvel grossed over $425 million in 2019, so it looks like that might be the cap for Multiverse of Madness if it continues the trend of its pre-sale numbers.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness also beat Fandango’s previous 2022 presale ticket leader The Batmanwhich sits atop the domestic box office with $368.8 million. The Batman also recorded the highest opening weekend of the year so far at just over $134 million, but if pre-sale numbers are any indication, the Dark Knight is going to be beaten by the former Sorcerer Supreme.
In addition to the presale announcement, Fandango revealed that in a survey of over 6,000 ticket buyers, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was voted the most anticipated film of the summer. That’s no small feat, as the next few months will feature films such as Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion, Light yearand another MCU installment Thor: Love and Thunder. It looks like the regular Doctor Strange diet the MCU has had for the past few years, combined with the promise of cameos and surprises, will push Multiverse of Madness become one of the biggest films of the year.
Even after its opening weekend, the track is clear enough to Multiverse of Madness to keep raising money. The only real competition will be on May 27, which will see the return of Tom Cruise as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the highly anticipated Superior gun after. Smaller movies like Fire starter and Downton Abbey: A New Era will be among the box office casualties as Multiverse of Madness more than likely dominates the month of May.
