Cannes rolls out the red carpet for the 75th Film Festival | Entertainment News

CANNES, France (AP) — After a canceled 2020 edition and a reduced gathering last year, the Cannes Film Festival rolled out the red carpet on Tuesday for what organizers hope will be a fully resurrected French Riviera spectacle.

The 75th Cannes Film Festival will open on Tuesday evening with the premiere of the zombie comedy “Final Cut” by Michel Hazanavicius. Over the next 12 days, 21 films will compete for the festival’s prestigious Palme d’Or, while a handful of high-profile Hollywood titles including ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘Elvis’ and ‘Three Thousand Years of Longing – will also be launched at Cannes.

“This year, everyone wanted to come to Cannes,” said Thierry Frémaux, artistic director of the festival, before the opening. “Everyone wanted to meet.

This year, Cannes will officially kick off Tuesday night with an opening ceremony ahead of the premiere of ‘Final Cut’, which was renamed from its original title, ‘Z’, after protesters in Ukraine noted that the letter Z stood for for some support for Russia’s war in Ukraine. .

The war in Ukraine should be a regular presence at Cannes. The festival banned Russians with ties to the government. Several films by prominent Ukrainian filmmakers will be screened, including Sergei Loznitsa’s documentary “The Natural History of Destruction”. Footage shot by Lithuanian filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravičius before his assassination in Mariupol in April will also be released by his fiancée, Hanna Bilobrova.

On Tuesday, Cannes will also present the jury that will decide this year’s Palme d’Or, the top prize. Alongside jury president Vincent Lindon, the French actor, are: Deepika Padukone, Rebecca Hall, Asghar Farhadi, Trinca, Ladj Ly, Noomi Rapace, Jeff Nichols and Joachim Trier.
