After being deserted for nearly two years, cinema ticket offices are seeing an incessant flow of moviegoers. It gave filmmakers the confidence to bring their films back to the big screen. This week, Bachchhan Paandey by Akshay Kumar hits theaters, and according to forecasts, the film should bring in moolah on opening day.
Film producer and business analyst Girish Johar believes that since it is a festive long weekend, Bachchhan Paandey will make audiences jump in cinemas. “Akshay Kumar is a huge box office draw. Also, the film is a hardcore commercial performer,” Johar said.
He added that if the movie opens well on Friday, it will have a “bounty weekend.” It pegged the film’s opening day box office collection at Rs 14-15 crore.
Considering Akshay Kumar’s track record at the box office, the chances of Bachchhan Paandey taking gold are high. Its last theatrical release, Sooryavanshi did a bargain for Rs 196 crore despite coming out amid the Covid-19 scare. He was also the first actor to have a big-screen release (BellBottom) after the coronavirus-induced lockdowns ended. And it’s his habit of showing three to four movies in theaters in a year that makes him a favorite of the movie show fraternity.
Explaining the phenomenon that Akshay Kumar has become in theatres, Girish Johar told indianexpress.com, “Akshay Kumar brings people to the theater four times a year. So, even the fraternity of the exhibition prefers it as it takes audiences to theaters. He created his own market.
Another reason why Akshay has become a bankable star in Bollywood is the varied roles in his filmography. “The films he makes are different from each other. Thus, there is no fatigue among the audience. He has made content-oriented films and masala artists in almost equal measure. That’s the reason it’s sought after at the box office,” Johar said.
Although Akshay Kumar is paired with Bachchhan Paandey, Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files could compete with the film at the box office. In five days, the Anupam Kher star raked in Rs 60.20 crore at the box office. Calling the film collection “crazy”, Johar said: “The Kashmir Files is going wild and these are numbers that nobody expected. Nobody expected a Monday or a Tuesday On a regular basis, the box office numbers could be 4-5 times larger than the movie’s opening day collection.Even though we knew the movie’s undercurrent was strong, it’s completely crazy.
He added, “I see Bachchhan Paandey will have to put up a tough fight at The Kashmir Files to make a profit. That said, if Bachchhan Paandey is well received, he’ll have a bounty weekend for sure as both films are like chalk and cheese. While Kashmir Files is a heartbreaking film, Bachchhan Paandey is a commercial masala artist supported by Akshay Kumar.
Now, it remains to be seen if audiences will give Bachchhan Paandey a chance amid The Kashmir Files box office storm.
Director Farhad Samji, also starring Jacqueline Fernandez, Kriti Sanon and Arshad Warsi, hits theaters on March 18.
