LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The gunsmith who oversaw the weapons used in the filming of the Western film “Rust” said producers had cleared a “dangerous” shoot and rejected his requests for training and other measures before it actor Alec Baldwin accidentally shoots a cinematographer.
Lawyers for Hannah Gutierrez, 24, released the first statement on her behalf Thursday night, a week after Baldwin’s fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust” outside of Santa Fe, N.Y. Mexico.
Safety was the “number one priority” for Gutierrez, who had been hired as a gunsmith and assistant master of props, according to the statement of attorneys Jason Bowles and Robert Gorence.
Holding both positions “made it extremely difficult to focus on his job as a gunsmith,” the statement said, adding that Gutierrez struggled to train, days to maintain guns and the right time. to prepare for shooting scenes.
Gutierrez “was ultimately canceled by the production and his department,” the lawyers said.
“The whole production has become dangerous due to various factors, including the lack of safety meetings,” they added. “It wasn’t Hannah’s fault.”
Santa Fe authorities are investigating the incident and say they haven’t ruled out criminal charges. A key question is how live ammunition was introduced into the Colt revolver https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/questions-swirl-alec-baldwin-shooting-case-ahead-sheriffs-update-2021 27 which Baldwin used after learning that the weapon was “cold,” an industry term meaning that it was safe to use.
Gutierrez “has no idea where the live bullets are coming from,” his lawyers said. She and the prop master “took control of the guns and she never saw anyone shoot live ammunition with those guns and she didn’t allow it either.”
The guns on the set were locked away at night and at lunch, “and there’s no way any of them were missing or shot by members of the crew,” they said. added.
“Hannah is devastated and completely beside herself with the events that have unfolded,” the statement read.
A spokesperson for the producers of “Rust” did not comment immediately on Friday.
Baldwin said he is heartbroken and is cooperating with investigators.
