After Tomb Raider 2’s Cancellation, Aubrey Plaza Shares Her Thoughts on Possibly Replacing Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft

Just a few weeks ago, the group led by Alicia Vikander grave robber sequel was revealed to have been canceled following much speculation about the future of the franchise. It’s still unclear what awaits the property as another studio seeks to secure the rights. But some are already proposing new actresses for the lead role, and Aubrey Plaza has appeared as a candidate. I can’t imagine a better Lara Croft and, apparently, Edgar Wright either. With that, Plaza shared some thoughts on possibly reprising the iconic role.

By talking to Newsweekthe star explained that famed director Edgar Wright couldn’t get over the visual similarities between Lara Croft and her Criminal Emily character. She revealed:

It was so funny when [Edgar] texted me because I hadn’t realized how amazingly similar these photos were. Emily wears a handbag strap and Lara Croft has a gun holster; these are very different. It’s very weird and totally accidental, but I’ll take it.

I can totally see it. Aubrey Plaza just might be the person to lead a whole new iteration of this franchise. The character has already been portrayed twice on the big screen, but maybe the third time is the charm? Angelina Jolie portrayed Croft twice, once in 2001 and again in 2003. In 2018, Alicia Vikander took over the role from Warner Bros. to restart.

Although the 2018 film was a moderate success at the box office, the studio still seemed determined to follow up. At the start of 2021, a grave robber sequel would have been in development, with Lovecraft County creator Misha Green attached to direct. There had been few updates on Alicia Vikander’s sequel before it was finally dropped. However, anything can still happen. Edgar Wright seems to have been the first to identify the similarities between Croft and the Parks and recreation alum. Maybe she and Wright could get into it once the franchise finds a new studio.

Of course, there’s still one question left to ask: Would Aubrey Plaza even be open to playing Lara Croft in another grave robber film? Well, based on her comments in the same interview, she seems willing to give it a shot, especially since she’s a fan of blockbuster movies:

Look, I have no idea what the future holds, but I love it. It was so funny when he sent this to me because I hadn’t realized how amazingly similar these photos were. Emily wears a handbag strap and Lara Croft has a gun holster, these are very different. But it’s very weird and totally accidental, but I’ll take it. I love action movies and I don’t discriminate between big movies or small movies. I like all kinds of movies. I would love for this to become a real thing, but who knows, I have no idea. He’s an iconic character. It’s the original badass.

Someone has to make this happen. Visual similarities aside, Aubrey Plaza has more than proven at this point that she’s a strong performer who can work across different genres. And frankly, it would be great to see her in more action-focused roles. (Many even think Plaza might be perfect for some Marvel characters.) On top of all that, she’d love to host the Oscars and become “this generation’s Billy Crystal.” She really is a woman who can do anything.

We’ll just have to wait and see if the star does indeed land the lead role in another grave robber to restart. Although after watching Edgar Wright it’s going to be really hard not to imagine someone else in the role, but the The happiest season alum. Hopefully she at least gets a chance at an audition at some point in the future.

We might have to wait a bit to see the next iteration of Lara Croft but, in the meantime, you can catch Aubrey Plaza in Criminal EmilyWho’s playing in theaters now. For more information on recent theatrical releases and upcoming movies, check out CinemaBlend’s 2022 movie schedule.
